Thank you for sharing your perspective here. It’s such a powerful thought release. It is somewhat disheartening to me that what you are experiencing and supposing you may experience at that institution is exactly what I experienced. I hoped that things would be better by now. I was one of 3 blacks in the industrial design program that I was apart of and saw less and less black designers in the classes that followed.
It’s important to raise awareness to predicaments like this. I truly support you in being whatever you want to be, but if you do choose to become a designer, I fully support that. Your story is powerful. Your perspective is one that’s needed in the design space. Again, I’m not trying to come off as biased because I am a designer from the same ethnicity group as you. An aspect of being a designer is identifying a problem and utilizing empathy to understand why that problem is so. There is a representation problem in design. There is a lot of qualitative and quantitative research on this topic online that highlight why it is so. You choosing to join this field with that perspective in mind is powerful and not very common. Again, thank you for sharing this article and your story. If you ever want to chat about the field or potential schools to go to, I’m available to chat via LinkedIn, https://www.linkedin.com/in/shawnjr. I am sure you may already know this info, but I’m also happy to share various online communities for black and underrepresented designers that could give you the opportunity to connect with black designers beyond myself which could be of value to yourself.
